Spotlight on the Native Irish Honey Bee Society (NIHBS)

Posted by: admingabriele

SICAMM Foundation has, as well as the Main Board of Trustees, both the Scientific Board and the Board of Members. The Board of Members is made up of representatives from the various organisations, local and national, devoted to the protection of the dark European honey bee.  This is the first of what is hoped to be a series of posts on the organisations that make up the Board of Members.

The Native Irish Honey Bee Society (NIHBS) is based in Ireland. NIHBS was established in November 2012 by a group of beekeepers who wished to support the various strains of the native Irish honey bee Apis mellifera mellifera throughout the country. It is a cross-border organisation, open to all, that consists of members and representatives from all corners of the island of Ireland.
Whilst the main focus on the dark honey bee, NIHBS also plays a role in the conservation of native pollinators – all species of
  • native bees;
  • hoverflies;
  • butterflies,
  • moths; and,
  • other pollinators – some of which are on the endangered list at the present time.

NIHBS is a stakeholder in the All Ireland Pollinator Plan and they are represented on the AIPP Honey Bee Strategy Committee.

NIHBS promotes plant biodiversity to help support Ireland’s pollinators and other wildlife.

Their website is packed with information; find out more on https://nihbs.org
